10 THINGS I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT - ICONS

Image
Finding 10 things I cannot  live without was quite difficult as it is not something I always think about. We were challenged to write down 10 things we cannot live without and do icon designs based on these objects. First, we were shown many different icon designs from illustrators and were inspired to design our own. We had to find our own inspiration, something we have never done or in a style that is not the same to our style.  Looking through different designs, I found a website, DRIBBBLE, where there was this cool 3D type of icon that really caught my eye. It was almost Japanese/Asian style with simple line and colour. I was told it was an isometric icon where the object is made to look 3D using a grid. This was very new to me which I was excited to do.  I had to fist make a grid which took a long time to do and many tutorials. I first made a grid with left and right diagonals but later noticed I needed the vertical lines too. The 10 items are did in th...

ICE CREAM TUTORIAL - VISCOM

Image
We were all given links of tutorials that we could do. There were different ones like Star Wars and barber shop tools. I chose the ice cream tutorial to do as the patterns, colours and shapes weren't my usual illustrating style.  Following the steps were quite challenging as i didn't use the tools needed before and I was slow getting around illustrator with these new techniques. However, through the process, it kind of left you to remember the first two steps which I had to go back and remember. It was fun using new tools and techniques and creating something that is not my style but I can use for future works. What I learnt: - how to make a grid - creating my own shapes since my illustrator does not have the tools - creating highlight/shadow - using layers correctly Tutorial URL; https://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-create-a-set-of-ice-cream-icons-in-adobe-illustrator--cms-24360 This is my final outcome using the Ice Cream Tutorial

SHAUN-HILL INSPIRATION PORTRAIT

Image
For this illustration, we were given an illustrator we did or never knew of and use their style illustration on our portrait. This was a challenge as it went out of my comfort zone and allowed me to figure out and learn their techniques of illustration. Shaun Hill was my chosen illustrator. a few things about him is that he is a South African freelance illustrator who creates pieces about his imagination. By looking at some of his work, some is scratchy and jiggered line work with 2 or 3 colours used. This use of colour is like my illustration as I usually work with 3 or 4 colours in my pieces. His style is cartoon like with a lot of different shading techniques which was a challenge for me.   Looking through his pieces, I began to see his techniques and how I can use this in my portrait. I used one of his drawings as reference with shading, colours and line work. I enjoyed using different techniques and getting to know Photoshop much better as I did nit like it before. Wi...

BLUE PENCIL TO DIGITAL - VISCOM 3

Image
13/03/19 We were inspired to start drawing illustrations using the blue pencil technique. With this, it allows to easily erase the blue outline of the illustration once scanned into Photoshop. This is a different approach for me and my illustration drawings. However, with knowing how to scan and erase the blue, I really started to enjoy the end result of filling the image with colour. This is how it was done; First we looked at an image of a plant and building and drew it, in blue/red pencil, in our style and in anyway we could. I drew the main part of the leaves and decided to add something to it so I drew my hand holding the plant. The building one was not my favourite outcome and battled to scan and finalise it on Photoshop as I didn't complete the line work on the original image. I took a clear picture of the plant image and scanned it onto Photoshop. Here is the steps I used; Place image onto artboard Crop image (embed - mask - marquee tool - inverse select) Image - adj...

OCEAN PLASTIC MINI PROJECT - VEGA 2019

Image
This is a mini project I did for my specialization at Vega. It was to do about ocean pollution such as nurdles and micro-plastic. The brief was to research more into micro-plastic, it's effects and impacts it has on the environments and life. With this, we must create a new type using the found waste lying on the beaches and create a call to action. I chose to base my type on single use plastics has it does not decompose or isn't biodegradable to the environment.  From our research, we had to present 5 concepts with a call to action and then pick the best one. The five of my concepts were about how micro-plastic is damaging animals (sea and land) and the effects it will have on our future. My 5 concepts were: I am drowning DURTBIN You KILLED Us Hell On Earth Gone but not forgotten With each concept I had to find different type that would suit the theme I wanted to produce in my final idea. The concept I chose was 'Gone but not forgotten'. The reason behind ...
