TYPOGRAPHY - POTATOES AND NAARTJIES

Learning to make letters and numbers from anything was very inspirational. Potatoes and naartjies were used for the process of creating my own typography. Cutting potatoes to create shapes and textures to either have block lettering or show the texture of the potato piece. I had to produce 10 of each letter and number resulting in 260 potato letters and 100 numbers which in the end, I picked each letter that was similar to each other.  I used naartjie skins as well to show a different medium than the usual drawing object. It was difficult to dip the skin in paint as it would dry quickly then become slimy. The texture from the naartjie letters were very different to the potato font as they were diferrent gradients of colour due to the texture. With both types completed, it came up to 52 000 letters in total. The process was torture but gave me an understanding that type is not easy as it seems.
